Rice, also known as Arhar, is the seed of the grass species Oryza Sativa. The most common rice consumed today is white japonica rice. Rice is grown across parts of Asia and Africa. The cultivation of rice started around 10,000 years ago in the Indus Valley. Rice is extensively cultivated in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and other countries. Rice is eaten as a whole grain or as a brown or white polished flour. Rice can also be eaten toasted or boiled as a cereal, or used to make pastas, risottos and other dishes. White japonica rice is the commonly cultivated variety of rice and the variety that is used for most of the rice recipes in this book. However, you can use any kind of rice you like for your recipes. Black rice is another type of rice that has a very different flavour and texture than the other types of rice. It is also slightly more nutritional than the other types of rice.

Water to rice ratio

How To Cooking Rice

Water-to-rice ratio is the most important factor that determines how well rice is cooked. Using this ratio will get you the cleanest pot and the best tasting rice. The ratio for cooking rice is 6 parts water to 1 part rice. This means 1 cup (250 ml) of rice + 6 cups (2375 ml) of water. So, if you are making a pot of white rice, the ratio is 1 cup rice + 6 cups water. Keep in mind that the rice should not be covered completely with water. It should be covered by 2 inches (5 cm) to prevent it from getting burnt. Rice is an absorbent ingredient and water is the conductor. So, when rice is added to water, the water conducts the heat towards the pot and gets cooked; meanwhile, rice absorbs the water and grows soft.
